Sex and Sexuality in Ancient Egypt
The ancient Egyptians had a very different sexual morality than our own society. Sex was seen as an important part of life, and the after life. Promiscuity before marriage was condoned and even encouraged for both men and women. Women were surpisingly free to take as many lovers as they chose, however couples were expected to be faithful after marriage. For women bearing children resulted in a higher social status. Similarly men were expected to father children to prove their masculinity.
This site has an indepth discussion of Egyptian sexual practices: http://www.thekeep.org/~kunoichi/kunoichi/themestream/sexuality.html
